Get outta here!!!

Strolling down the streets of Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, we stumble across Mister Charley Boorman himself! We couldn’t believe our own eyes. Of course Henriette ran across the street and gave him a huge hug and Lars gave him the manly handshake – he probably had to hold himself back not to throw his arms around the poor surprised guy.

Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor was the inspiration to this trip. In 2007 we watched the TV series “The Long Way Round” where the two guys travels on motorcycles from London to New York, through Europe, Kazakhstan, Russia, Siberia, Canada and USA.

It was more than surreal to run across this cool guy. Neither Lars or I are particularly interested in celebrities, and this is probably the only guy, who can make us go: “ohmygodohmygodohmygod”!

Many adventure riders have strange opinions of the adventures of Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor, because they had a support vehicle, they were not the first to go round the world on bikes, yadayadayada… We think this is a load of BS. They are simply 2 guys who did what they wanted to do, they had a lot of fun doing it, and since they managed to have a TV-series produced about their trip, they have inspired a lot of people to get out there on the road and do overland traveling on their bikes. Everyone does it differently. Some ride their brand new BMW Adventure and wear their BMW suits and their heated vests and cloves. Some go on classic bikes the rough way. Some go round the world on bicycles others go in big campers with build in spa, pool and bar. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that people are out there, meeting new cultures, new people, living their lives to the fullest.

Thanks to Charlie and Ewan, I found myself fresh off the Dempster highway in Dawson City and a big R1200GS — just two weeks before your encounter with Charlie Boorman. (So envious!)

I feel the same as you wrote about the long way round “duo”, and I’d totally run over and give a hug, too! Thanks for the terrific blog, and especially this entry 🙂
